Defender L663 CAN4 Architecture

The Defender L663 is built on Jaguar Land Rover's latest CAN4 / EVA2.5 electrical architecture, featuring a high-speed Ethernet backbone with DOIP (Diagnostic Over IP) for all module communication.

Network Topology

The Defender uses a central gateway module with multiple CAN FD networks and Ethernet segments. The IMC (InControl Module Controller) runs Pivi Pro over a high-speed data bus. All modules communicate via the gateway using UDS over DOIP on the OBD-II port, requiring a genuine JLR DOIP VCI for full diagnostic access.

Gateway & Modules

Key modules include the GW (Gateway), ECM (Engine Control), TCM (Transmission), ABS (Brake), SRS (Airbag), BCM (Body Control), KVM (Keyless Vehicle Module), IMC (Infotainment), RFA (Remote Function Actuator), and TCU (Telematics). The Defender V8 and P400e variants have additional powertrain-specific modules.

Diagnostic Interface

Full DOIP diagnostics on the standard OBD-II port. Requires Pathfinder 2023+ with a genuine JLR DOIP VCI. The interface supports extended diagnostic sessions, security access, and routine control for all modules. CAN bus sniffing is possible on certain networks for advanced fault tracing.

Programming Access

Module programming is performed via the Pathfinder online service using JLR's secure backend. Firmware updates are available for ECM, TCM, BCM, IMC, and other modules. CCF (Customer Configuration File) editing allows feature activation and parameter changes.

Defender L663 Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a generic OBD-II scanner on the Defender L663?
Generic scanners are severely limited on the Defender due to the CAN4 DOIP architecture and security gateway. Most modules will not communicate, and you cannot clear manufacturer-specific codes. A genuine JLR DOIP VCI with Pathfinder is required for full access.
Why does my Pivi Pro screen go black?
Pivi Pro black screen is usually caused by IMC module failure or software corruption. The IMC may need to be replaced, virginized, and reprogrammed with the correct CCF settings. Read our IMC repair guide for detailed steps.
Can I add a spare key if I have only one?
Yes. As long as you have at least one working key, we can add additional smart keys or UWB digital keys via Pathfinder. The procedure takes approximately 30 minutes and requires the vehicle to be present or connected via remote diagnostic.
What is the cost of a full diagnostic on a Defender?

Can I activate the 3D camera view if my Defender didn't come with it?
